Our prayer focus for October is on the Bethlehem Center in Chattanooga, Tennessee. It began in 1920 with a Bible study started by UMW in the basement of Phillip’s Memorial Church. They soon grew into a day care and kindergarten. The current Bethlehem home was dedicated in 1960. Today they are making plans and looking forward to celebrating their centennial birthday coming up in 2020 and the 150th anniversary of UMW in 2019. Their mission statement reads “We are God’s people empowering inner-city youth and families to lead responsible lives by providing discipleship, education, and leadership development.” Programs offered today are divided into 3 areas – First-eighth grade children benefit from the read to lead program, read to lead summer academy (art, science, technology, music), and morning manna (a safe haven and devotion/prayer time as they wait for school buses), 9th-12th grade students are involved in the Bethlehem Leadership Unit where each student is challenged to create a project where they can in some way improve their community, city, or state. The young adults 18+ meet once a month for a fellowship activity such as bingo, hiking, cooking class, dinner, or inspirational speakers. Birthday cards will be sent to missionaries Rachel Harvey in Pennsylvania and Jeannie Chaney in Texas. We continue to send cards and pray for those on the prayer list of BFUMC.
